Portugal
A Journey Off the Beaten Path
Where do I even begin? My first solo backpacking adventure took me to Portugal, and trust me, it was full of surprises. But let's get one thing straight—skip Lisbon if you want to see the real magic of this country!
Instead, head to the Algarve, where the coastline will steal your breath away. Or, if you're after an adrenaline rush, rent a surfboard and ride the waves in Ericeira—a surfer’s paradise. Still not convinced? Take a flight from Lisbon to the Azores. These islands are nothing short of spectacular. I walked around the island of Faial, and (almost) climbed Pico, from sea-level, Portugal's highest mountain, where the views are out of this world.
Let’s talk about Madeira
This place is like stepping into a fairy tale. Honestly, it’s my second favorite place on Earth! The lush landscapes, the unique culture... it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
But if you're determined to visit Lisbon, I can at least make sure you experience it differently. How about visiting the oldest bookshop in the world? Or, for something a bit out there (don’t judge!), I can tell you where to find the preserved head of a famous serial killer. Creepy? Maybe. Fascinating? Definitely.
And let’s not forget Porto. The city that seems to whisper history with every corner you turn. Have you seen the iconic tiles on the ceiling of São Bento train station? Or stood between two ancient temples divided by a super narrow house? You won’t find these on the typical “10 things to do in Porto” list.
